Athanasios the Athonite is also called Athanasius of Trebizond. He studied in Constantinopole and became famous as the preacher Abraham. He moved to Mount Athos in 958. He was a Byzantine monk who founded the monastery on Mount Athos (Agion Oros in Greek) which later became the most important centre in Orthodox Monasticism.
