Russian icon painted by Theophanes the Greek. The icon is egg-tempera on wood. It is found in the Iconostasis of the Annunciation Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin.
The Virgin is directed towards Christ and to the right, in a stance of supplication on behalf of the Church and the faithful. The icon symbolizes the supplication of the human race before the Judge-Christ. The presentation of the Virgin from the right is referred to in a psalm of David (44:10-11)
